If say I wanted, purely for research purposes of course, to use a Torrent site to download some films etc what would people recommend? I've heard of people using various ProxyBay sites but they seem very unstable at the moment.

the way it's going with Torrents and all the takedown notices I would hold back unless you have access to a good proxy or can hitch up to someone else's wireless, i would use something like Showbox on an android phone, you can choose the option download instead of stream and export the file to your pc change the format to .mpg and it will run on most players, or you can stream direct to tv. its a bit of a pigs ear using an Iphone but the apk is available but for ease you need to use a jailbroken phone far too much crap on an iphone checking for legals plus they want everything to go via iTUNES, hope that helps

Someone I know uses STB Emu on an amazon box and android phone/tablet. Pays some nice people on Facebook 35 notes a year for live satellite channels from around the world and video on demand such as boxsets and movies.
