What do we want from this site?

Herbie, who as the chant goes IS our leader, has stumped up the running costs of the site to keep it going out of his own pocket but is there a future for the site? The answer is in your hands.

The title of the site gives a clue to it's nature MATCHFISHING, so matches are put on and apart from the blue riband events - Hillbilly Pairs, Stafford Moor, Woodland View, Monkees v Shandees, etc, the rest are struggling. Look at the once sought after events that have been cancelled Boddington, Glebe Christmas Match, the matches on the Thames looks dodgy as does Poolfodder's on Cudmore.

I think more matches have had to be cancelled than have taken place, so where is the incentive for MOs to organise them if they end up having to cancel and put themselves in an awkward position with fishery owners for potential future bookings?

This site was about meeting up and having a days competitive fishing in good company while sharing methods, learning from each other and having a craic. I know there are commitments, winter leagues, family, work...BUT this is YOUR site it is time to stand up and be counted.

    Rant over

I will own up to letting my match attendance get down to zero over the last few years. Work was the main reason working away from home over the last few years during the week home at weekends it just did not fit my life style.
Now retired but just seam not to have time. I do meet up with Poolfodder once or twice a week to do a spot of fishing.
Travelling far and wide is not for me these days.
The evidence I have noticed around me is most are using Facebook to see the local matches and team fishing. You only have to see how many fisheries have Facebook pages for match bookings and match results.
Not sure what can be done to increase match attendance.
As for the site myself and Neptune will keep it going software wise etc.but as BTG says we need suggestions of how we can increase membership and match attendance.

I would sadly say the site is finished apart from the main events of the year.

Carls last 4 matches on AAMF were all sold out within ten minutes, and over subscribed, all matches are nearly always sold out. The matches are run very similar to the CL format with a final match of the season. i am not out to run the site down, quite the opposite, i loved the CL and the format, but sadly BNF destroyed this site with a lack of transparancy, and as the change of ownership took to long to materalise, so the members left in their droves.
Speaking to many ex members, nobody likes the new site format, everyone stated they liked the previous format and why did it change, why did the CL finish etc.
Go back to what it was and maybe, just maybe most may return.

The site format was changed for a simple reason.
The old site software was outdated and insecure and not longer support by the original design house, hence the change.
    Simple as that.
I find it hard to believe members left because they did not like the new layout

Sorry George as much as I like you , that is b*****ks.....I don't remember Gold Valley being a success.

If you are a match organiser and you run a match on a venue that is in vogue, people will flock to it regardless of the source it is run from. I currently use MFS and have been using my own FB group page to organise matches along with 'word of mouth'...........I think people will gravitate across to FB as its free and are not the type to indulge in angling forums as they may have done in the past. Carl's matches at Lake John, Slough House will be popular and sell-out as will mine at OBH, Rik's at Sumners and Pikeys at Orchard and Morehouse.

As for MFS............the old format is lost forever, people have left and wont re-join.... that was a great moment in time!

Personally I'm happy (selfishly) with the current MFS set-up, I get to fish with my mates and enjoy the high profile get togethers. There remains a loyal band in the South (S/West) but the loyalty IMO is only to the MO Herbie, Pikey, Rik, Russ and I (apologies if I've missed anyone). As Individuals they just want matches to fish and we provide them.

HOWEVER if it's at a cost to individuals that is wrong and can't continue. Unfortunately with nobody about with the drive, passion and enthusiasm to move it forward then there is only one outcome.

The experiments of Boddington in November and Glebe in December were always likely to be risky and the Thames matches were forgotten about until the past 2 weeks and not the best examples of failure IMO.

Mark, Boddington became an annual event, started by Colbrad I believe,- one in the November and one in March/April and both were always popular.

Brian, they were annual in April and occasionally in October (11/10/2013] but never as late as November after frosts have hit.

Agree completely Hathers. I've seen countless posts from Neil and Gooner about cancelling bookings on the other site if they cant drum up numbers and Carl's match on the back bowl of lake 2 at Monks was only filled because I made people aware of it in our Facebook chat so bit of mis-information from Georgie Porgie there!

I have a select bunch of venues that I enjoy fishing and that are within a comfortable driving distance. Pikey, Hathers/Russ, Rick etc run matches at a number of those in MH, Orchard, Monks and Sumners and I will continue to support those as best as I can.

Sadly, I do think MFS as a site is dead or very close to dead and it needs to move to social media to have any chance of surviving. There is no advertising of the site other than word of mouth and with a now very limited membership, word of mouth isnt worth much. Facebook is perfect for running matches and growing a community as word spreads quicker than crabs with shared posts and tagging etc so it is far easier to drum up support on there than on a site that very few people know about.

Bottom line is what has gone is gone and we can't change it, what we can do is form what we want the site to become and work towards that.

The old site had to be changed as the software was unstable and under constant attack fro the cyber hackers, Neptune spent hours every week to keep on top of it to keep the site up and running.
At the moment their is a general trend not to use forums, do not ask me why perhaps it’s a trend to move on to something new

Just my opinion.....The Latest Threads needs to be the opening scene as opposed to the chat box at present.
In other words you start with the Latest threads in chronological order then scroll down to the shoutbox, the reverse of what it currently is.
To be honest it's only recently I've found the Latest threads, after scrolling down further than previously.
I believe if they are in your face they will get used more.
Secondly make it free membership, it only takes ten of us donating a few quid each to keep it going.
Finally we all should make more of an effort to attend our get togethers, matches etc. For instance, there are maybe a couple of dozen
of us in the NW who fish matches on a regular basis, if we all ran just one match each a year we would be back up and running.
So come on everyone stop moaning and do your bit.
    I THANK YOU.

this site runs 6 matches/ festivals throughout the year

stafford moor silvers 40+ anglers over 7 days
woodland view 30+ anglers over 3 days
hillbilly pairs 50+ anglers over 2 days
nick gilbert monks pairs 60+ anglers over 2 days
    late s/m bash 20 + anglers over 4 days
    monkees v shandies 40+ over 2 days

add to that affers midweek bash and ricks winter league

when facebook can match that come see me and i will join.

there is little point in bleating about this site , its a members site and if the members are happy to drift here and there , so be it. i will continue to keep this site alive until only ken , bryan, zinks and i are left.
as for a free to all site kept afloat with donations . i don't see why not . i will contact our ken to get a yearly costing and then put it too the paid members for comments. followed by a vote.

Think poolfodders idea of a free membership site could work, I would be more than happy to donate to running costs as many others would, optional membership could increase traffic flow, nothing to lose, also good point re chronological order of posts, makes it so much easier and in date order, list the first 15/20 then drop off in last entry order.

Maggotdrowners is non compulsory membership, slightly different to this site but has a strong membership that is active.

    Agree Alan
But the issue is what do we do with those have paid a tenner
    MD charges for advertising
MFS the decision was made when the charges took place was not to charge for advertising after he that will remain nameless ripped a few members off.

Fair point Zinky, don’t think it would be an issue for the members that have paid recently as we are talking about building the forum and activity and the core members could consider it a donation, it’s kind of keeping the forum going, it could upset a couple but that’s life, as long as it potentially helps overall.

Yes I appreciate the advertising situation, I have no idea of running costs but sure we can overcome that situation, plenty on here would help.

Running cost are now lower after you know who left.
Running costs are not an issue anymore.
We need a good idea to bring people back some good names are no longer interested for one reason or another.

I for one just can not get excited at 3 and 4 days fishing and have to book months in advance.
Then again I can not even bother with one dryers that are local. That may be issue with others, but new members do step up to the mark.
